"Williams Addison Kimball, My Grandfather, Cerita Kimball Russell. 1919." Mixed-media, with gem-tintypes on fabric; in a period cigar box. American. 1970s-90s

Folks who live in geographical areas with long, harsh winters generally have hobbies. For this craftsperson, a period cigar box from 1919 with an identifying paper label was, apparently, sufficient inspiration. Tintypes, one-of-a-kind photographs priced inexpensively, were introduced in the 1860s and popular until the 1900s. Whether the tintypes are fanciful representations or actually depict members of the Kimbal family is unknown. The stenciled spelling inside the box differs from that on the original label (Kimball vs. Kimbal), and the box's cover material is plexiglas (instead of glass) — indicating this is a later project.
