Architecture Without Signs

I love graphic design. I understand the importance of way-finding systems. I own a label maker. I wish I had a color-coded closet. But architecture needs to work without words. The building should point your way to its entrance without an arrow. Finding the visitors desk should not require a level change. If everyone is putting their feet on the wall, the bench is too close.

This may seem like an obvious statement, but on three recent occasions, in buildings designed by architects for the display of art, the signs crept in. At the James Turrell-created Skyspace in Houston the lettering was a rogue gesture, born of the frustration of the maintenance staff. At the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island, the landscape architecture (by Reed Hilderbrand) undermined the architecture (by Herzog & Meuron) by suggesting there were two ways in to the museum when in fact, there is only one. My kids ran down the other path the first time, reading the windows of the staff offices as an opening rather than a sealed surface. At the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the entrance rotunda had been emptied of any form of greeting, sending the visitor into the museum's taupe depths in search of a map. Up? Who wants to go up? We just got here. Especially when you have a stroller. (I've been told the new director will be moving the visitor desk back downstairs, an indication of the whiplash the staff is currently feeling.)

An intuitive understanding of where to go is a hallmark of the best interaction design, one of the many places the physical and digital worlds (should) overlap. But I wonder if our increasing reliance on apps isn't sapping design attention to real portals. It is certainly sapping the ability of the general public to read maps and make advance plans. I could stand in the IMA atrium and look up a map of the museum on my phone. But why? I should be able to find art without asking any questions, reading any signs, turning to my digital companion. Or reading too many "No"s about my art-viewing behavior. Inviting people in goes beyond free admission, which they have at the Skyspace and the IMA, but not at the Parrish. Entice them in through glimpses of actual art rather than lobby art, or a lobby masquerading as art with its pretty colored glass panels. The Parrish reads as a museum through our prior knowledge of the art barn type; that typology doesn't include information about whether you enter at the end or on the side.

I recently describd an ideal, frictionless, wordless environment in an essay on the children's app maker Toca Boca on the New Yorker blog. In Toca Boca's case, much of their target audience can't read, making words superfluous and irritating, as well as adding extra costs for translation. I feel strange asking architects to treat us all as children, but that may be the easiest way to test the effectiveness of buildings at working without signs. Imagine a five-year-old dropped into the parking lot or campus. Where will he go? What will she climb on? Can they, pulling together, open the front door? Architects should not allow the visitor to trip, physically or graphically, on the threshold.

Excellent blog. I agree, design should be intuitive. I think it applies to more than architecture too. How about walking through any museum and enjoying the exhibits too?

Nice post. Our increasing reliance on apps is sapping design attention from real portals. Augmented reality's solution (Google Glass) is to layer more text in front of our vision field. I hear of noise and light pollution, but typographical pollution can be even worse. We need to find other solutions.
The devil's advocate to blaming the architecture is Frank Lloyd Wright's "hidden" entrances--the point is to discover--as opposed to an internet interface which thrives on pure functionalism. Maybe if you are visiting a building for the first time, shouldn't you have to ask someone? Or learn it for yourself? Are we in such a hurry to get back to checking Facebook status updates? The process of learning for yourself rather then relying on wayfinding or Google seems to heighten brain function.
Either way, graphic design should be integrated artistically into buildings, not the way it is most of the time: ad-hoc add ons slapped on without much thought, or worse, "Branding."

Sometimes graphic design can be useful in architecture. Media displays are especially interesting and have many unthought of future uses.
However, I've found that the design specialties usually have a condescending attitude toward each other. As a result, the most of the built world is fragmented and doesn't really work well. It seems the author here is on the graphic design side.

The funny corollary (or perhaps additional symptom?) here seems the overly directive architecture meeting the best intentioned graphic design and resulting in failure on both counts: am thinking of the spiral ramp in the Rose Planetarium....

Kids probably can't find the entrance to buildings anymore because bright colors, ipads, tv, marketing, mcdonalds, and sugar is fed to them 24 hours a day.

Great post! The observations are extremely dated but I am glad to see the idea(s) expressed (again)--as it is rare these days. I have never understood how signs ever came to be considered wayfinding in the first place. Wayfinding is a human behavior and it is primarily founded in the legibility of space. Just ask Pei why he designed the National Gallery as he did. Nodes, districts, paths, gateways...etc. This is how Lynch described the way humans understand environments (cities). The exact same ideas scale to buildings themselves. A perfectly symmetrical building with mirrored quadrants is a nightmare to navigate...Why? Because the legibility of each quadrant is exactly the same and it is therefore impossible for an individual to know where they are and where they need to go. How in the hell did we ever lose sight of this in the first place?

I think that intuitive design is a great aspiration but that it also isn't always practical. I am thinking about extant buildings that are revamped for purposes other than their original. In this case, I think that informed wayfinding is essential. All people experience space and architecture differently. Can there ever really be a purely intuitive space?? Your observations make me wonder.

When architecture can't stand on its own, such as with historic buildings and in crowded urban settings, design must be supplemented by graphics. But too often, the graphics are designed by "insiders," i.e. those who are familiar with the facility. As a relative newcomer to NYC, I constantly find myself at odds navigating facilities where the signage I need itself is missing or corrupt or just plain unclear. If you are familiar with a facility, sure, it is almost intuitive where to go to find the coat check room, an elevator, the coffee shop, or a restroom. But what if you're looking at the facility with naive eyes? if you are navigating a retrofitted building, an historic facility, or even a newer building shoehorned amidst others, the search for signage can be wearisome.

Intuitive design is not always intuitive for all visitors. It's like the international traffic symbols: if you don't know what they mean, you can't always glean meaning. So much of modern design is aimed at looks and not functionality. Bathroom taps that are slippery when wet, oversized doors that are hard to push open, benches in public facilities that are away from the artwork. I think there needs to be a marriage between the minimalists and those of us who need to be led about a bit more than is what you all call "intuitive."

Thanks for all of the great comments, and I am glad others share my frustration. Some basics need to be restated from time to time.

It's funny that commenters brought up Kevin Lynch (a touchstone for me) and the Rose Planetarium. I was at AMNH Sunday and, as usual, skipped the planetarium addition entirely, because it is almost impossible to negotiate the level changes, find the bathrooms, and avoid the gift shop. That museum is, in general, a nightmare with a stroller, and the new exhibition design is so much tighter, wordier, and pushier than the glories of the refreshed dioramas. My kids spent the whole Whales exhibit playing inside the full-scale model of the blue whale heart.

And walking through Brooklyn Bridge Park on Saturday (the new Squibb Park Bridge over the BQE is pretty great, and offers nice inftastructural views) we discussed how that park lacks Lynchian organization. There are edges and paths, but where are the nodes, where are the landmarks on this side of the river? The only obvious one is the carousel, which unfortunately turns the between-the-bridges part of the park into a backyard.

Wayfinding is an obvious source of frustration in buildings you don't know. But how about the daily irritation caused by buildings that have a poor designed interface? Doors going the wrong way, lightswitches at the end of a corridor, HVAC and alarm systems that require a PhD to interact with.
How many times do you have to tell your home that you're back before it fully gets it? You approach the house, wifi spots you (1), open the gate (2), open the front door (3), switch off the alarm (4), switch on the light (5), turn on the heating (6), open or close the curtains (7).

Is there any architecture school that teaches Human Building Interface? No, they prefer teaching advanced rendering. So we get lost even before we find the front door of our Architectural Masterpieces.

I'm not sure if the point of Kevin Lynch's work was to say that we should have overly directive architecture (as Downer points out). What I get from Lynch is that our mental images come from mapping the experience of physical space--and the increasing superficiality of logos, branded architecture (department stores), and historic recreation are more disorienting then a confusing entrance. If anything, architect designed buildings are the last refuge of memorable experience in our built environment.

Good point. I agree with your interpretation of Lynch. In my opinion, and therefore as a result of my personal experiences, overly directive architecture is typically LESS intuitive. It is not about directive space, rather intuitive space--which in my experience usually involves space that is easily decipherable in terms of spatial understanding. It seems that overly directive space (a rat maze of indiscernible, or indistinguishable, and therefore imperceptible pathways) is the opposite of intuitive in terms of spatial understanding. Following an overly directive form may impede the development of any considerable spatial sense (thus the cognitive map becomes increasingly distorted). We know that spatial logic is more effective than route logic in terms of wayfinding (very evident in route reversal scenarios). When an architect effectively establishes a spatial dialogue it is a wonderful experience, especially for someone who relishes the design process. And it seems quite obvious when you are experiencing a building that excels in that regard.
