On Nov. 4, 2008, Illinois Senator Barack Obama defeats Arizona Senator John McCain to become the 44th President of the United States of America. As the first African American voted into office, the 47-year-old Democrat picked up 365 electoral votes and over 50 percent of the popular vote, while his 72-year-old opponent secured only 173 electoral votes and 45 percent of the popular vote. Senator Joe Biden of Delaware was Obama’s vice presidential running mate and McCain’s was Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the first Republican woman ever nominated for the role of vice president.
